Burçak İnel

Burçak directs the EBF team dedicated to advancing banks’ financing of inclusive and sustainable growth; the team uses regulatory advocacy, research and best practices to expand banks’ financing of the economy in the areas of SME lending, financial markets, and sustainable finance.

Among others, she spearheaded the EBF’s adoption of the UN Women/Global Compact’s Women’s Empowerment Principles as well as UNEP FI’s Principles for Responsible Banking.

Until 2015, Burçak was the Deputy Director General of FESE (representing European securities exchanges), where she initiated strategic projects such as the Small and Midcap Awards and the IPO Task Force in addition to working on financial markets structure policies. Between 2001 and 2005, Burçak was a lobbyist for the banking sector; in 2003, she received the “Lobbyist of the Year” award in a global Euromoney competition for a political campaign that improved primary markets legislation on behalf of a broad industry coalition.

Before moving to Europe, she worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., on financial and private sector development in Central and Eastern Europe.

A Belgian-Turk, Burçak holds a Political Science B.A. from Mount Holyoke College (the oldest institution of higher learning for women in the US) and a Master in Public Policy degree from Harvard University. She graduated from the American Robert College of Istanbul.

She is married and has two children. She plays the accordion.
